Simple Good Deeds...

I remember going to my friend’s house for dinner one night. We went to the table and I was directed to a seat that had a red plate at it.
This plate was very different than all the others. First of all, it was red. The others were white. The color wasn’t all that was different about this plate. Around the outer rim of the plate, in bright white letters, were the words “You are special today.”
I remember sitting down, looking at the plate, and thinking how do I deserve this? What did I do to be “special” today? My friend’s mom went on to explain that I was a guest in their home and that in itself was worth celebrating.
She explained that every time someone in their house had something “special“ like a birthday, a good grade on a test, scored their first soccer goal, was baptized, made their bed without being told, or was just simply nice to their brother, they would get the special plate at a meal. This tradition was one way they encouraged each other.
I still love to go to my friends house and I love the red plate. It taught me that there is so much to celebrate!!! By showing love and simply doing something good for someone else, like putting a special plate in front of them, can change the course of their day. You can recharge their happiness and encourage a higher self esteem.
Several years later, as I ventured out into the world on my own, my friend’s mom gave me my own red plate to be used at my house. We celebrate when company joins us for dinner and we celebrate life around our table.
This simple task of spurring me on to love through their good deeds is something that I also wanted to do for others.
So, that reminds me of verses from Hebrews:
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near. -Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)
Let us share the story that life is worth celebrating and that simple good deeds done to show love to someone else are contagious. They help recharge the soul and should be shared.
What are some ways that you can do something good to show love to someone else?
Try to find someone this week that might need to hear they are special. Encourage them. It’s one of the greatest gifts we get to give!
Thankful for this life and praying with you,
Kristin
Dear God,
Thank you for today. Thank you for our time.
As we attempt to recharge our spirits, we ask that you give us the courage to reach out to others as well.
Help us to show love, not only through good deeds in our home, but out in the world as well.
May we always remember, that through Jesus our Savior, you have told us, we too are special today. You unite us all as your family. Help us to spread that message.
~Amen
